Lynx 2.8.6 (uclibc compiled by Karolis) is set NOT to keep
persistent cookies. I changed this line in lynx.cfg and it still does not
retain cookies. Lynx.cfg says this may be due to how it is compiled.

Dillo by default does not accept cookies. Netrik is too strange for a
beginner. Opera won't run well in 16MB RAM and 120MHz.

Unless links2 can be set to accept persistent cookies.
I downloaded the user manual from the link in the program. It is large
and fairly recent and has quite a lot of Czech embedded in it. I offered
to edit the English. No mention of cookies.

A web search on links2 and persistent cookies informed me that elinks does persistent cookies, also CSS and HTTP authorization (SSL). It logs in automatically to fastmail and even does automatic redirection. (Lynx and links do neither of these).

Hit Enter before filling things into forms including login and password. You have to fill in www. and com as for links. Annoying colors (pink and lime on grey) but you can set it to mono instead in setup or View toggle document colors. Toggle images (what does this do?). Does not share config file with links1 and links2 (which do share files). Does not work in graphical mode. The help files are in good English (unlike links2).

Elinks needs kernel 2.4 for some reason.

I compiled 0.11.4rc1 (1.6MB) and may compile the latest version (12 unstable or 11.7 stable with bugfixes).

Compiled to need libbz2. In theory it can be compiled with javascript support but I failed. Uses ECMAscript code, same as Mozilla. Implements only the parts that don't need a graphical browser, such as redirects. Uses SpiderMonkey code. There is a long page on how to set it up, with patches, which I could not get to work. Steven, please can you help?
A non-graphical javascript browser would use less resources than Opera.

Roughly 1.5MB (or 5.5MB while displaying an image). Click on the image name and it asks what program to use to view it and whether to block the terminal. Choose Open not Display (displays the binary file) and do Block terminal or you won't be able to exit the viewer. zgv % or xli % (in console or rxvt).

Needs kernel 2.4 to display properly (I forget what happens with 2.2).

It should work fine in 16MB RAM (apart from not being able to exit zgv or even seejpeg without killing them along with elinks itself).
