Most of this has been gone over already, but something that I didn't see
mentioned on the multi-version question...

We do need some form of multi-version support, if for no other reason than
that people sometimes need to cast a spell on a box with older dependencies
installed than what the latest version wants. Ideally they'd upgrade the
whole thing, but sometimes that isn't an option. This is loosely analogous
to the problem we had in the past when apache would move their non-current
releases off their main download site and our spells would break because we
couldn't download the version we were using anymore.

The last major time this was discussed it was noted that since the
grimoires are tested and released as a unit, allowing arbitrary versions of
apps in spells wasn't feasible or remotely supportable. A feasible
solution to meet the need without breaking full unit dependencies was
documented here: http://bugs.sourcemage.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11809

The goal of this approach is just to provide past grimoire versions so that
people can scribe those older grimoires and cast older versions of spells
(and their dependencies) from them using cast -g. This should meet at
least 80% of the need without making a huge lot of work for spell
maintainers or putting a bunch of stuff in sorcery. Mixed installs like
this also wouldn't be officially supported, but we'd at least have a
supported way to do the casts and a place to start to give people advice on
how to best go about things.

Note that http://bugs.sourcemage.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8370 is also relevant
to this since without it cast -g is a one-shot that gets lost on the next
cast of that spell.
