While the core of the KDE desktop should be maintained together, there are
apps in that section that do not need to be maintained with the main core
packages. I'm not that familiar w/GNOME and XFCE, but I suspect there are
apps in both areas that do not /need/ to be there nor do they need to be
maintained with the core packages.

When I'm searching for a new program to fulfill some need (e-mail client, CD
burner, text editor, whatever...), I like to be able to go to one place and
browse and experiment with various programs until I find something I like.
With apps being placed based on their development library (GTK, QT, etc.),
rather than their function, that is not possible.
