The Latterday Saints say put the dry ice in the bottom of the pail, a chunk about the size of your fist. Pour the grain or beans in, cover loosely until you see the dry ice vapor starting to seep out around the edge, then seal tightly. What you are trying to do is replace the oxygen in the bucket with carbon dioxide. Another strategy is to freeze the grain for a week, if your freezer is big enough to accommodate a 5 gal bucket.

Hi, DGilsen, you wrote
Another thing that works to debug your dried food is dry Ice. fill
your
bucket with whatever you are trying to preserve to about two inches
from the
top, Then place about six to eight oz of dry ice in the top of the
container and put the lid on loosely .
I have question here:
Why not put it on the bottom of the empty can and then pour the grain
or beans on it?
For my imagination it would make a lot more sense to put the dry ice
in there first and then fill the grin on top - thus the expanding CO2
really drives out all air. I inagine, that if put on top part of the
air might stay trapped on the bottom of the container, so grainborne
bugs could still feast for a while till they use up the oxigen (no
idea how long this would take).

Regarding containers for items like dried beans, wheat, etc., one of
the
most common choices is a food grade five gallon bucket. The easiest
way to
deal with potential insect issues is to fill the container and then
freeze
it for a week, which should destroy any insect eggs.

Check out the Mormons they recommends that all their members get a

I would like to see this develop into a useful thread. Things I would
like to know about are:
I. Equipment
1) insect-proof, waterproof dry foods/bulk foods storage containers
for
things such as whole rice, corn, other grains, beans, pasta, seaweed,
dried fruit, tea and coffee, nuts, seeds, granola, dried peppers etc.
2) proper storage containers for canned and bottled goods that you do
not want on shelving, incl. oils, tamari, vinegar, condiments and
sauces, butters: sesame, sunflower, almond (and/or peanut, cashew),
honey, rice malt, barley malt, molasses etc.
3) best ways to store grains and beans for prevention of insect damage
4) recommended refrigerators and freezers (for me that would be GE
freezers, small capacity, several of them and nothing but Sanyo
refrigerators (I have 4 medium sized counter top models without
freezers, one still in the box, 3 in active use year round)
II. Food to acquire for long term storage
1) My suggestions:
seaweed
dried hot peppers
sea salt
rice
barley
corn grits
corn meal
dried fruits
tamari
vinegar
miso
umeboshi
natto
olive oil
sesame oil
canned herring, sprats and sardines
canned tuna
canned chicken
canned beef if you can find any on sale
dried fish, sardines of varying sizes in bags from Asian stores
dried mushrooms
butters: sesame, sunflower, almond
granola
honey, rice malt, barley malt, molasses
