one easy way to preserve food is a cup of food grade diatomaceous
earth(check health food stores) not pool supply places. Sprinkle one cup of
diatomaceous earth over a 5 gal bucket of dried food peas, wheat, beans, rice
almost any thing that is dried then hammer the lid on the bucket. Word of
advice however, Plastic buckets even food grade buckets get old and fragile
and will fall apart over time metal paint cans or metal five gallon cans
with
lids will work better . Another way to store things is in glass
containers with metal lids. rodents will chew through plastic lids in a
heart beat
if the even suspect there might be food in them, I can vouch to that. You
can eat diatomaceous earth with out any problem, yea it is a little gritty
you can wash it off the dried food prior to coking if it bothers you.

Another thing that works to debug your dried food is dry Ice. fill your
bucket with whatever you are trying to preserve to about two inches from the
top, Then place about six to eight oz of dry ice in the top of the
container and put the lid on loosely . Soon you will hear a hissing coming
from
the container, as you tighten up the lid you will hear a more furious
hissing let it sit it will take a while and hour or so and then you will
hear
the hissing diminishes and get softer and softer finally when it is only a
soft hiss tighten the lid the hissing is the heavy co 2 forcing the air out
of the container. the food will keep much longer in an oxygen free
atmosphere. As for bay leaves, well yea bugs don't like the smell of bay
but if
that is the only food to eat is bay flavored well they hold their noises and
wolf it down.

Oils have a short shelf life. Olive oil seems to last about 15 years if
you can keep it cool and in a dark environment. light shortens oils life
span a lot get oils in glass containers with METAL tops store honey in
Glass
and pit plastic under the metal lids as honey will corrode the tops of
metal lids.

A years supply of bare essential foods are as follows
400 pounds of grains wheat corn oatmeal Regular( not quick)rice and pasta
60 pounds of legumes including dry beans, split peas lentils etc.
16 pounds of powdered milk
10 quarts of (16 ponds of shortening equals 10 quarts of oil.
60 pounds of sugar or honey (67pounds of honey equal 60 pounds of sugar)
8 pounds of salt
one gallon of water per day per person just for drinking not cooking or
washing
I did not recommend spices, that is for your tastes, store in cans not
clear bottles as light and heat degrades them. If you only have clear glass
or
plastic containers wrap them in tinfoil to protect them from light .
I hope this helps

MS/PhD Student Research Opportunity-January 2012

The Cardoza lab is looking for an outstanding, enthusiastic, self-motivated
graduate student with interest in the sustainable agriculture and soil
arthropod ecology. Research in my lab employs a multidisciplinary approach
to elucidating the mechanisms driving insect interactions with their
environment, particularly in agricultural systems.

The selected student will be part of a sustainable agriculture
multidisciplinary team evaluating cover crop decomposition and nutrient
cycling. The main focus will be on arthropod community composition and
their role in these processes. As such, candidates with demonstrated
enthusiasm for, and experience with, field research are highly
encouraged to apply for this position. Experience with sustainable
agriculture practices is a plus.

Our labs include a diverse group of researchers interested in ecological
and organic agriculture production techniques and their effects on
various aspects of soil quality and arthropod and microbial activity.

Requirements: We welcome inquiries from enthusiastic and dedicated
individuals with background in entomology, ecology, biology, agronomy,
soil science or related discipline. Minimum GPA 3.0, GRE required.
Degree in entomology or a related discipline for MS candidates (BS
required), PhD candidates (MS required).

Candidates are required to formally apply to, and must meet the
requirements to be accepted by, the North Carolina State University
Graduate School (http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/grad/prospect.htm) before
consideration. Academic requirements are determined by the Department of
Entomology (http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/entomology/).
