I just came across this new book
THE WINTER HARVEST HANDBOOK: Year-Round Vegetable Production Using Deep-Organic Techniques and Unheated Greenhouses .
By Eliot Coleman

Offers clear, concise details on greenhouse construction and maintenance, planting schedules, crop management, harvesting practices, and even marketing methods, to successfully harvest fresh vegetables all year round.

Paperbound.
Illustrated in color.
247 pages
Published by Chelsea Green
ISBN 1603580816
Current Pub at $29.95

and also this older book, which has been reissued by Chelsea Green.

SOLAR GARDENING: Growing Vegetables Year-Round the American Intensive Way .
By Leandre & Gretchen V. Poisson

Shows how to increase the effects of the sun during the coldest months of the year and how to protect tender plants from the scorching intensity of the sun during the hottest months through the use of "mini greenhouses." It includes instructions for building a variety of solar appliances plus descriptions of more than 90 different crops, with charts explaining when to plant and when to harvest.

Paperbound.
Illustrated.
267 pages
Published by Chelsea Green
Size(inches) 8 x 11
ISBN 0930031695
Current Pub at $39.95

You can ask your library to order one or both, or get them on interlibrary loan, if your library is still open and still offers this service. Or look for other books on solar greenhouses. (Both are also available at edwardrhamilton.com/ at about 25 percent off.)

south side of my house. The floor will be insulated underneath (it
can't be at ground level due to tree roots), and we'll do everything
we can for thermal mass - water containers in front supporting the
beds, and a brick paver walkway - but I'm still concerned about how
cold-hardy it's going to be here in Michigan (it will only have
solar heating). At a minimum, I'd like to be able to start seeds in
it in March (as opposed to in my living room)... I would love to
hear of others' experiences with small greenhouses in cold climates,
and what diy modifications they might have tried to prevent the
plants inside from freezing. I'll be glad to share whatever I learn
from my experiences.

Kris, I have been thinking about this a little myself. I wonder about using some fome insulation that would swing down at night in an effort to hold on to a little solar gain? -Jeff
