Scott,
I think there are more than one species with the common name "paw paw". Th one in the tropics is Carica papaya, while the one being discussed here (I think) is Asimina triloba. I eat papaya seeds for intestinal parasites, and feed them to my chickens.
Interestingly, Asimina triloba is in the Annonaceae family, most of which are tropical. We have 8 different species of annonaceae here. I know that many f the annonas have toxic properties in their seed. I had no idea there was a temperate annona!

Further to what Jordan says, PFAF says the seeds contain toxic
alcaloids, and are emetic (i.e., make you barf):

Can I eat the seeds of the paw paws now that the fruit stage has gone
by (which I missed..) I am able to pick up some of the dried up pods
with seeds. Are they ok to eat?
