I did eat two them ...they were rather meaty and kinda flavorful but hard to open (I used a hacksaw actually)which brought my question since what I read was not definitive. I will eat no more but look forward to fruit in the pods next year. Been eating some ok walnuts and hickory and staying away from the pignut hickory (really harsh but meaty..cracked a few for the chipmonks and squrrals)
Thanks everyone for your help.

Once again, to echo what someone posted earlier, I think that there may be a mix up going on in this discussion between "pawpaw" and "papaya" (which some people also call pawpaw). I have also frequently nibbled on PAPAYA seeds to avert parasitic problems (also makes a very nice pepper when dried and ground, kind of horseradish- like), but I have heard that PAWPAW seeds are actually quite rough (slightly toxic) on the system when taken internally.

This is pretty interesting. Do you eat them raw?
Chew them or crack them or swallow them whole?

When I am in the tropics I eat a few paw-paw seeds
to kill intestinal
parasites that I may pick up - particularly worms.
I eat four or five a day
and have never suffered any ill effects.

Further to what Jordan says, PFAF says the seeds
contain toxic
alcaloids, and are emetic (i.e., make you barf):

Can I eat the seeds of the paw paws now that
the fruit stage has gone
by (which I missed..) I am able to pick up
some of the dried up pods
with seeds. Are they ok to eat?
