Pawpaws are certainly found in some parts of southern Ontario, Canada, but they are rare, limited to the Niagara Peninsula and regions near Lake Erie.

Papayas are called 'pawpaws' in Australia and other places. This may be
what was meant.
So far as I know, the fruit called 'pawpaw' in the USA, Asimina triloba, is
only found in this country, and just possibly in some parts of southern
Canada.
