Personally I'm a recent convert to Ubuntu Linux http://www.ubuntu.com/,
its open source, has a commitment to freedom and a deep community ethos
which resonates well to me with permaculture principles, and most
importantly for a non-techie type like myself it 'just works' rather
than needing loads of coding knowledge or whatever. After much
hesitation and procrastination I put ubuntu Dapper Drake onto a new
laptop i'd bought, so its dual boot with windows XP. But I don't think
I've booted into Windows for weeks now. Unfortunately I do have a number
of programs and legacy files which will only run under windows, other
than that I can't see myself ever going back, especially now that
Microsoft are trying to push Vista down our throats. If you've ever
considered breaking out of the whole windows upgrade cycle and moving
over to linux now would be the perfect time.
A couple of other Linux distros I've toyed around with that would be
suitable for older machines are Damn Small Linux (DSL)
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ and Puppy Linux
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=puppy
both of these are tiny (around 50 meg), will boot from live CDs or USB
drives and provide all the essential tools such as word processing,
spreadsheet, email, web browsing, etc free of charge.
