Strictly their choice of course.

Many rural townspeople in Australia would like that to happen because it would make their towns more socially and economically viable, but it is not going to.

As your respondent said, people are packing up and leaving rural towns and smaller towns west of the Great Divide. They are going in two directions: many migrate to the cities; others move to larger rural centres such as Dubbo - these larger rural centres are 'sponge towns' absorbing population and the business of the smaller centres.

On top of this is a larger trend - the move of Australians to the coasts. We have always been a coastal people but the trend has become pronounced in recent years. Demographer Bernard Salt, who studies the phenomenon a few years ago, is about to release a new edition of the book of his study - The Big Shift - that shows that the drift to the coast is far from finished.
