Aloha,

Way ahead? So when is dumb and inefficient not simply dumb and inefficient?

IMO it's important (and core to Design practices, PC or otherwise) to not
limit ourselves to what is proposed by others, but to create what we want.

Muscle power is pretty portable, and *very* efficient per calorie of food
consumed.

Your question assumes we *don't ask* the question "is it even possible to
justly and sustainably keep driving (not to mention manufacturing)
vehicles as we know them?"

Do you mean PC as in PermaCulture or as in Personal Computers?

If the latter, what model of distributed power?
Any personal computer you care to point to is completely dependent for its
mere existence on a very few, very large, very energy-hungry transnational
corporations.
