Hey, everyone, I'm hoping some of you can help me.  I'm planning a sustainable homestead situation, with an emphasis on agroforestry and polyculture food forests.  I've been trying to figure out, for a variety of crops (coffee, tea, vanilla) what is a "standard" planting density, yield per acre and price per ton.   I can't find any information on this but I'm sure it must exists - how do farmers decide what to plant?

Thanks,

You didn't mention where you are. I assume from your list (vanilla, etc.) that you are someplace tropical. If you were in the US you could just contact your local Ag Extension, or the university. If you're in some out of the way place like Trinidad I'm sure they have something quite similar. I suspect there are few places by now in the semi-developed world that don't sponsor some sort of ag research and statistical base through the ministry of agriculture or the schools. Go down to the library and ask around. That's what librarians are there for-- answering questions that have been asked before.

Hope this helps,

Mike
