Seriously...viruses work against Micro$oft products for the same reason that viruses work on monocrop agriculture - there's no ecological diversity, no way to stop the transmission between email and other parts of your system. By not using Monocropsoft products, you limit your exposure to virii, which are by and large targeted at Outlook and Windows vulnerabilities.
