I have had almost no luck in rooting mulberry cuttings or kiwis (in El
Sobrante CA near Berkeley) but grape, fig, currant, gooseberry, etc do very
well. I put them in dirt or potting soil (or the compost heap) to root in
January--sometimes I have used rooting hormone but usually not. I scratch
the bark a bit just below each of the two buds I put under the soil for figs
and grapes (and have two buds above). Occasionally I have almost no figs or
grapes root but usually I get a high percentage.
I had heard that some folks in S CA root mulberries in November--a different
trick--not yet dormant--but S CA they also have a mild winter.
Some friends in San Francisco rooted kiwi--probably a moister and cooler
environment.

Mulberries root very easily for me from dormant

Richard, would you care to relate your procedure?
I've had minimal success rooting dormant-collected
cuttings - though I would have anticipated them to be
similar to their 'cousin' the fig, in ease of rooting.
I will say, though, that I've not done much more than
dip the base of end-of-the-season unused scionwood in
rooting hormone and stuck them in soilless potting
mix, with not much aftercare or attention.
Thanks,
Lucky
