I'm surprised no one has suggested Gashell grafting compound.  It's easier to used than anytthing mentioned previously- has a texture like kid's clay.  I do most of my grafting to water-sprouts so I use the compound only to cover the tips of the scion wood after wrapping tightly with electric tape.  I usually use the cheapest type, not the rubber and slit it in late summer to stop girdling.
