I think your choice depends on weather you are grafting scions to baby rootstocks indoors or top working grown trees outside. For baby grafts I use regular canning paraffin wax that I melt in a crock-pot. Put the wax in a glass jar and then put the jar in the crock surrounded by water. After taping the whip graft with masking tape, quickly dip the end of the tree in the wax just past the union to ensure a total seal. I learned this method from the treemendus-fruit web sight but they have since taken the tutorial page down. For top working outside I would use Tree Kote. The little jar comes with brush attached to the cap for smearing it on and no heat is required. I am still learning too but these methods are what have worked for
me with success.

i love trowbridge's grafting wax - you can melt it in your hands (but coat your hands with oil first so it doesn't stick or you'll curse yourself) or stick it in a can and use a torch or campstove to heat it up to brushable consistency (my favorite way). it smells great, seals well, and doesn't crack.isn't tree kote a petroleum based tar? if it is, i'd steer clear. if you can't find the trowbridge's wax, try Doc Farrell's grafting seal - it's a bright yellow latex goo that degrades after a season or so.good luck!_______________________________________________karen (tillou)oregon city, OR - zone 8a and wet
