Gordon,
You are dead center, drop dead accurate in your assessment. Population is the source of most of the problems we face even though that is an unpopular, non-PC position to take.
I have long believed that it is impossible for the human species to address the problem, hence the inevitible.

My argument is that the existential challenges to the human species right
now are far too serious to throw away any of the arrows in our quiver of
survival tactics including chemicals that may make the land more
productive. That doesn't mean agricultural strip-mining by corporate farms
should not be regulated and converted to more sustainable methods.
I must get far off the main topic of this list to respond to this. The major problem with the dissappearing forests and other "wild" spots is directly caused by the number of people on earth who require the products that such lands can give when used to the greatest extent. Until such a time as man is intelligent enough to control his own birth rate the danger will continue to exist. This is a drastic measure which must be taken at some time. The sooner the better. If it is desired to keep all of the natural items intact birth control MUST be initiated for the human species. This is the only way that status quo can be achieved with the natural environment.
