I'm not on the great plains, but I am in the midwest in a climate that also feels some wild fluctuations of temperature.  I've had A. kolomicta for probably 12 or more years, and while it's had lots of flowers I've only tasted 2 fruits.  I don't think it minds a sudden drop in temperature--that is what they experience in Siberia in the fall.  The problem here is that they break dormancy very easily, start growing and blooming early and almost always get nailed by a late frost.  Fruits formed this year and I thought that I would get more than a taste, but they all fell off before maturity.  I suspect that they were victims of the drought that we were touched by towards the end of the summer.  I wouldn't recommend them for most people unless there was a way of dealing with those issues.

It might be worth your while to inquire further about the experience of
others with hardy kiwis on the Great Plains. Actinidia kolomikta is tasty,
keeps 2 or 3 months, and is very high in Vitamin C (300 plus milligrams
per 100 grams of fruit). It has been grown in southern manitoba but I'm
not sure how long it lasts there.
