thank's for the suggestion.
I did not think about this possibility before.

I'm well familiar with Armillaria mushrooms
(Mmm, yummy ;-). The mushrooms usually pop up later in
the fall.
I investigated ground near the trunk and bark and did
not find any signs of mycelium. I've never seen
Armillaria anywhere nearby.
