My opinion "for what it's worth". Fruit breeders produce cultivars
primarily for commercial growers. They need to all ripen at the same time, all
be about the same size, color and shape, they need to "look" good or have a
great deal of eye appeal and yield high loads of fruit and withstand shipping
without damage. Taste is one of the "lesser" characteristics sought.
There are few breeders that set out to find or produce a cultivar that is
primarily for home growers. If one is produced it is usually one that did not
meet the requirements of the commercial industry.
Home growers do not finance the breeding programs.
