I grew up thinking I really didn't like fresh peaches
or nectarines. One of the few fruits I felt that way
about, actually. And then I started working in fruit
breeding, and I tasted them from the tree. Completely
changed my thinking on it. There are few things in
this world that can rival a dead ripe peach from the
tree.

Seeing the peaches at the grocery store just depresses
me...occasionally I get tempted into buying some and
I'm always disappointed. Same goes for plums,
actually, but my grandparents had a plum tree, so I
always knew they could be better than what you get at
the supermarket.

That said, I agree that the main problem is mostly one
of when things are harvested, because I've had
wonderful peaches of the trees from industry standarf cultivars.
