I've been in the same boat - spent many many hours
trying to pick which varities. The problem is what
thrives/resists insects and disease/tastes good
varies greatly with the climate, so it's hard to get
advice except from locals.

I ended up choosing a couple of highly disease
resitant and a couple of unique heirlooms, figuring
we'd get at least some apples, and I could replace
the heirlooms if they didn't work out. I'll have the
first small crop this year.
