I believe the buckthorns ARE worse. So competative they seem allelopathic, they really take over ! And the berries make the birds ill, but the birds eat them anyway. I wish there was some market for the buckthorns, so more people would be out cutting them down.

I'd trade it for the Himalaya blackberries we have, any day. Wish someone
could find a plant that was totally allelopathic to the berries. I'd plant
it by the acre.

Autumn olive is becoming a troublesome invasive exotic in some places. Yes,
the blossoms smell great, and the fruit is useful or at least helpful to
wildlife. But it can take over !

I wonder whether it is truly allelopathic. It grows fast and forms a thick
canopy; I bet it simply robs other plants of water, nutrients, and light.
No toxic exudates needed.
