The Foley Food Mill looks like a saucepan with holes in the bottom and an
angled blade with a crank on it. The fruit works best if it's somewhat
juicy, and it should be broken up in a blender first, on low speed so you
don't break up the seeds. Set the mill on a pan or bowl and put the
material in the mill. When you turn the handle the blade pushes the juice
and pulp through and leaves the skins and seeds behind. Whatever you are
juicing should have seeds at least as large as tomato seeds or they may go
through the holes. You can do about 1 to 2 quarts at a time and it takes
about a minute or two to run it all through. I find that, with grapes at
least, it's worthwhile to save the pulp and seeds and squeeze it by hand in
a net bag to get the remaining juice.
If the fruit is pulpy, you may need to do something to remove fine pulp from
the juice. I run it through a Champion juicer and the separated pulp makes
good fruit butter - just heat and sweeten it.
