I started my SAR TEK II class last weekend. I would think that the
navigation skills taught there would be useful in almost any search
experience. You have to know how to get to the area they want you to search.
The first aid and survival skills are also good for all of us. I would have
thought most MSAR would require this class, am I wrong?

I agree that all in SAR should start with the fundamental ground SAR skills, then add a specialty - MSAR, SAR Dog, etc. - if desired. National standards for SAR are available through ASTM F2209 (and related documents) www.astm.org ... or the NASAR SARTECH II status meets the ASTM standards. Going forward I anticipate the national standard for MSAR (in progress) through ASTM will require meeting the ground SAR national standard, then adding requirements specific to mounted searchers.
