Lydia

A dog either has the proper drives or he/she doesn't. It has absolutely
nothing to do weather a dog is in tact or not. Having been an instructor for
many years, I can tell you that it is the men that have the problem with
castration when it comes to their dogs. For some reason it doesn't seem to
bother them with their horses, but they like their dogs to be in tact and
the drive is the best they can do for a reason. ~ ~ ~ ~??
Now women on the other hand, are quick to spay their bitches. Not too
difficult to understand that.

Seriously, I have worked both sexes in tact and fixed and it has absolutely
NO effect on their search drives. After my bitch was FEMA certified and had
one litter of pups, I had her fixed. Good thing too because if I had not,
she would have been due to come back into heat when we were under attack on
9/11. She would have not been able to respond to her call to the Pentagon.
After her deployment to the Pentagon, I certified her to the advanced level
of FEMA Type I. Proof of no loss of drives there!
I have a dog, Rip, that has reached seven years old and he has sired two
litters. I am now thinking about neutering him for health reasons. We have
enough prodigy on the ground to keep the lines going so why not. I might
even consider keeping some frozen from him just in case. The point is, I
know that he will not be any less of a SAR dog if I neuter him. There is
absolutely no question in my mind that he will continue to work with or
without his testicles.
No matter what you have been told, they are really not attached to his nose
in any way whatsoever anymore than Sage's ovaries were attached to her nose
or her work drives!
I choose these dogs for their breeding lines from working stock and imported
them from England. Still, I am not a breeder and have only bred them to
bring better BC's to the states. Out of their litter of seven, one is a
service dog for a paraplegic, one is a competition agility and obedience
dog, one is in a pet/ranch home, and three are SAR dogs. One dog and two of
the bitches are still in tact. as a matter of fact, I am waiting for a
litter to be born right now! The mother is one of the bitches from my Rip/
Sage breeding. She was bred to a dog living in Utah. He too is a british
import. He is a breed Ch, Obedience trial Ch, master agility and herding
titles. Am I excited about this breeding?? You bet ya!!!!! I have great
expectations for this litter. Even though I don't own it, they are still my
breeding and Im sure you know how that is.

If you see any differences in your dogs it is because they are individuals
with different drives and different personalities. Not because they are
fixed or not. The only thing that neuitering does is make a dog less
agressive to other dogs if neuitered early enough. I promise you it won't
effect his work ethic.

Do the right thing and spay and neuter all dogs unless you have exceptional
lines and you have done your health screening. Hips and elbows OFA, and eye
cerfs.

BTW, Sage is a very good rider and Woody doesn't mind packing her when she
gets too hot or tired.
