After one of the worst winters Oklahoma has seen, we are now having a MAJOR
problem with asparagus beetles. I have honestly never seen so many beetles,
eggs, and damage in 15 years of growing asparagus. Right now the wind is
blowing about 40 mph so trying to spray is pointless.
We started picking last Friday, and haven't picked a marketable stem yet.
I guess I'm writing as a heads up to other asparagus growers, and wondering
if anyone else is seeing this. We are fairly isolated out here, with no other
gardens, or farms, other than wheat, for a couple of miles at least.
I know everyone has been dealing with weather extremes, but I really thought
our cold, cold winter would have reduced bugs, not increased them!
