Same here in northern Illinois Phil. I keep hearing from people what a harsh winter it was, but it really didn’t get that cold (-8F). And with the snow layer all winter, the bugs and rodents survived just fine.

We had around 50"of snow on the ground this year but the ground never froze in the fields this winter so everything that was there in the fall survived the winter, so bugs and rodents are extremely present this spring.  I have noticed that  all the yards look like some one turned out the hogs in them, the goffers and moles are every where and the hay fields are a real mess.
