What is the best thyme to plant?
If you have a herb society in your area (or an herb sale with the society -- ours in Yellow Springs is legendary and there is also another huge, reputable sale at Landis Valley Museum in Lancaster County) find out what grows best in your area and where the best herb sales are.
Thyme isn't easy to grow from seed, but if you buy starts from a good source, they will grow and spread beautifully for you. There are *many* varieties. Around here "English" thyme is what is used for culinary uses. "Mother of thyme" is worth having for pollinators -- bees *adore* it, the plant makes a lovely groundcover and the little purple flowers are pretty.
Golden or silver thyme look nice with the English thyme for selling. I just got a "lime thyme" last year -- very, very green --, but it wasn't happy with all the rain last year.
Remember "The Time Garden" by Edward Edgar (ISBN: 0152020705) -- lots and lots of thymes out there!
