I'm growing basil ("Italian Sweet") for the first time this year.
An experienced basil grower was appalled when he discovered that I was
rinsing the picked basil and packing it wet in plastic bags. Who has
suggestions on handling harvested basil? I have some putting on flower
heads; what do I do about that? Pick and discard? Or pick and sell?

Willie,

I also grow basil. I have a 60 foot row of it! You do not want to rinse
it before you sell it. Just try to shake off what ever dirt is on it
and sell the way it is. By rinsing it, it will cause the basil to get
nasty and soggy and then you will not be able to sell it. And when it
flowers, you for sure want to dead head it or the plant will stop
growing. I have never tried to sell it with the flowers on it, but
maybe someone will want it that way! It will flower constantly once it
starts. I will dead all the plants in the morning, come home from work
that same day and it will look like I never did anything! I will not
have a 60 foot row of it again until I am at home working!!!!
