The rule at our local market is that bona fide growers may also sell up to 50% from sources other than their own farm. This was established because we do know that there are weeks that a small grower might not be able to fill a stand with the bounty that customers are accustomed to see at a supermarket.

My gripe with the market has been that the new managers ignore this simple rule by letting in the wholesalers who do not farm or garden at all. It would be bad enough if they were retailing for other local farms, but they bring peaches and watermelons from North Carolina in early July because the local farm/wholesale supplier they buy from has a large retail store and nursery center as well as a farm, and imports from all over the Atlantic region.

If the market managers changed the documentation or enforced it, I'd be satisfied with either action. Justifying the lies with "but the market needs vendors" just ties my knickers in a knot. And it insults me -- I guess I'm not a vendor, just a PITA to whom truth means something.
