The FAQS are really good. So, this is meant to be a constructive evaluation
not a slam.
I could do without the sexist references under KEEP IT CLEAN.
The "would you say this in front of your mother, wife, etc."
suggests that this forum is male, otherwise husband would have been added to
the list.
It also assumes that women and children have higher moral standards than men
do...that's why you would use them as the test for naughty behavior.
That's a myth that we shouldn't be promoting. In reality, some of the
ugliest behavior I have ever seen in my life was enacted by women.
That whole paragraph should be rewritten. Not to be politically correct but
to be clear.
The "mother, wife children" test is the one the sexual harassment guides use
and is not appropriate here. In fact, it isn't too appropriate for business
either. There are some men out there who could describe situations where
they have been sexually harassed at work by women. Even in that context it
assumes that only men are the culprits.
In the spirit of adding constructive offerings instead of just criticizing
people for the hard work they have apparently done to put this together:
Instead of:
KEEP IT CLEAN
This list is open to subscribers from many different ages and backgrounds.
Profanity, ethnic slurs, and personal or professional attacks, are not
acceptable. Ask yourself, "would I say this in front of my, Mother, wife,
children, etc?" If the answer is no, think twice before you send it out to
several hundred list members.
How about:
CONSTRUCTIVE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE LIST
A large variety of people contribute to and read the messages on this list.
It is destructive to the community on the list to send messages with content
that may be viewed as profane, sexist, racist, elitist....<actually scratch
that, we'll have an endless list of what can be offensive>
Say instead,
A large variety of people contribute to and read the messages on this list.
It is destructive to the online community to send messages with content that
may be viewed as offensive. Be thoughtful about the way you construct
messages and especially if you are in disagreement over an issue.
Contributors who are persistently abusive or offensive in their postings
will be unsubscribed from the list.
Sincerely,
Del Williams
