I agree with the statements that Jeffery made about the Great Pyrenees. They
are very intelligent, loyal and gentle with the things that they understand
to be their wards. I have also learned that they are very head strong and
stubborn, especially if they feel that they are right. We have had Pyr's for
over 5 years and now raise and sell the puppies because of our love of them
and the protection that they offer to our sheep and our garden. We stay away
from the lines that are show and breed for the working ability of the dog.
We have bear. Coyote, and all of the small varmints that like to terrorize
the gardens. Yet they are gentle enough to corral a renegade angora bunny
and keep it safe until we return home and put her back in her cage. They do
bark at night, but again this is a territorial bark that says "I'm big and
bad and this is my turf, stay clear." If I wake up at night and don't hear
Gabriel barking I wonder what is wrong. They have a low pitched bark, and it
is not an annoying bark, but one of comfort for me. They do tend to roam
some, but not all of them do. I have found that if you only have one
patrolling at a time this helps. It also helps to have them spayed/neutered
when they are young. As for the birds, they don't like the big birds, such
as hawks, or vultures. But they do well with the chickens, as long as the
are introduced to them when they are pups. By doing this they understand
that the bird belongs there and they are to protect it. We love our pyr's
too and I doubt very much that we will ever be without them.
