Hi,
We had the same problem - guineas roosting in the pine tree along with some stubborn roosters. They were disappearing one by one and discovered it was a bobcat. When they growl at you, it makes your hair stand on end. Also, a possum got into the chicken house one night before we shut the door and killed a chicken. We adopted a female Pyrenees from the city (registered with a fancy name and all clean and slick) and she took over her duties like an old pro. Haven't lost any animals since we got her. She runs the geese off when they get out and want to get on the front porch, but hasn't harmed any of our animals. We had a male Pyrenees and he did roam, but this one doesn't. The male killed a few chickens and was awfully hard on the geese. Pyrenees don't like to obey unless they think it's in their best interests. The male we had would bark at and run after hawks or any big birds. The female ignores them. My biggest concern was the chickens - so many dogs like to kill them. The sheep don't like the new dog - they stamp their feet at her.

We have a bobcat problem. At night I can hear her out there yowling. Last summer she had a litter and she decided that our farm was the local meat market. The guineas that roosted in the peach tree dropped in population one at a time. When the chickens didn't get locked up at night, they got eaten. My neighbor (about half a mile away) complained yesterday that all of his geese were gone.
So, I'm looking for a good dog. I had a Komondor, and never lost an animal from predators, but several years ago he got bit on the nose by a copperhead and quickly died.
I've been look for a replacement but can't find one except from the show dog type of breeders (which I don't trust to know a working dog from a barbie doll).
I'm also open to another breed, does anyone have a favorite livestock guard dog and know of anyone that breeds them. I'm in Northern Virginia.
Great Pyrenees are occasionally advertised around here but I'm suspicious of a dog the books say roams.
