We have two Great Pyrenees and love them.  They do bark, but they stopped all coons and critters from getting in the chickens, almost stopped coon damage in the sweet corn near the house.  One seems to have bonded with us and guards the house, and one bonded with the sheep.  I think they are worth their weight in gold and wouldn't live with out one. The Newfoundland  is closely related to the Pyrenees and probably would act similarly.  I'm sure there are alot of other good dogs out there.  If you want a guard dog, what good is it if it dosn't bark and mark out a territory.

I've heard that Great Pyrenees bark all night. That's part of their marking their territory and keeping other animals away. We had seriously considered getting one until we heard this (from friends who have one and from some summary on their breed.) Is this everyone's experience? Or do you find this is not true?
