Friends,
The past week has been such a great one for this listserv. I thought I'd
start another discussion. I always learn so much from other farmers. This
morning, I thought I'd ask how many of us are doing cut flowers, what
varieties do you really like, how are you marketing, etc.

We do about 25% cut flowers, 75% vegetables, but the percentage of cuts
grows every year. We market them as bouquets at our farmers' market. We
found out last year that taking the cuts to market in buckets and making the
bouquets there was really effective at drawing customer attention. Very
frequently, we got special requests, then another customer would say "make
me one just like the one you just made for that lady!" We also got requests
for special occasions - weddings, parties, etc, where the customer came out
to the farm and picked up whatever they had ordered (buckets of cuts, not
made bouquets)

some of our favorites from last year :
Of course, Benary's Giant Zinnias, our mainstay.
Flamingo Feather Celosia - great vertical filler
Cramer's Amazon Celosia - late blooming, but the magenta color is fabulous!
Verbena Bonariensis - vertical accent, and great color
Salvia Viridis - great filler
Rudbeckia Indian Summer - with sunflowers, a mainstay for those "fall color"
bouquets
Ageratum - we love Blue Horizon, White Bouquet and Red Top aren't nearly as
productive, but the colors are nice
Amaranthus 'Hot Biscuits' We have only seen this from Park Seed. For
fall, the color and form are great - our customers raved over it

Enough from us. What are some of you doing. Has anyone successful grown
the Bombay Celosias ? Are they worth the seed cost ? What perennials are
you doing ? We'll all be too busy in another month, so let's take advantage
of the last few weeks of winter, and brainstorm!
