I like to think of Permaculture and Holistic Management as "frameworks" for all the other things we do.  Using a big-picture, everything's-related perspective helps make decisions appropriate for our goals.
Those two philosophies are complimentary, in that one, Permaculture, grew from a Forest orientation to include a lot of societal aspects, while Holistic Management evolved from prairie and range management into more of a business-decision model.  Both very useful "thinking tools", whether you're gardening, farming, or just wishing you were.

Here's an excellent video from the UK that outlines the issues around  
Peak Oil and gives examples of farms in the UK that are using  
permaculture techniques to produce food without the reliance on fossil  
fuels.
