I agree with your perspective Carrie,  I've got one of Bill Mollison's books and have found many more free sources of information on line. Permaculture is a word, a concept, and from that concept we can learn and gather ideas.   I'm also very interested in food forests and do the same as far is getting info online and through books.
I went to a free lecture by Brad Lancaster on Rainwater Harvesting and bought a  signed book at a discount. It's in my reference library as well.  I have no problem with the Permaculture educators making a living off the concept.  If someone wants to pay for these workshops, good for them for being smart enough to make a living doing what they believe in.   It's my choice how I spend my money and there is plenty of low cost information to dig into in books and on line.   Anna in Az.,

Ok,
at the risk of showing my own lack of intelligence, I must weigh in here.

For me, reading Bill Mollison's permaculture books helped me think and observe what was going on in my garden more than any other gardening books did.

The individual ideas of stacking, watching for patterns, and zones related to house position were especially enlightening to me.   I think it was the permaculture literature that also encouraged me to watch for the whole life cycle of things with an eye to being the best steward.

I've since come across similar statements in Joel Salatin's or someone else's writings about reducing the outside inputs by utilizing as many on-site resources in as many different ways as possible...

All the social engineering and marketing of permaculture, I just ignore.
