I sent the following reply to Dieter, and
later decided to send it to all after being reminded by several sympathetic
responses that we have a bit of a community going here.
Well, CLL is an autoimmune disease that presents as
overproduction of defective white blood cells. They don't do their job and
they don't die (sort of like bureaucrats). CLL, like a lot of
diseases of western society, is the body's response to insult. Generally
speaking, the medical community cannot say precisely what that insult was for an
individual. In my case, since I have a genetic sensitivity to gluten (from
both parents - very rare), my nutritionist postulates that a gluten "'allergy"
has been banging against my immune system for 63 years.
On the other hand, since every one of my ancestors
(except one - 1918 flu) has lived to 90+, I really can't complain about
genetics. Also, I'm healthy, fit, never smoked, etc., so it appears I have
a chance to die WITH CLL, rather than BECAUSE of it. Toward that end my
nutritionist suggested that I eliminate the insult (gluten), and improve on all
the healthy habits (diet, exercise, etc). For example, the "Pollan" diet -
Eat (real) food. Not too much. Mostly plants. In addition, I'm
taking supplements to increase my hormone production, which apparently
suppress CLL (explaining why CLL is a disease of old men). That's
it. No fancy tricks, just do the stuff your grandma told you and the body
will respond in a positive way.
Helps explain a desire to grow healthy food,
doesn't it?
