This isn't exactly a "won't eat it if it came out of the ground"
story, but years ago, I tried hiring a live-in housekeeper. I was
working long hours, and I thought it would help to have someone there
all the time. My kids weren't small, but I worried about them being
on their own so much of the time. So I hired this nice young lady who
stayed with us exactly one week. She paged me on the second day, and
when I called home, her voice was nearly hysterical. She had told the
kids she would fix lunch for them soon, and they said not to
bother--they would just graze from the garden, which we all did all
the time. She told me, with her voice quavering, that they were "out
there picking things off the bushes and EATING THEM!"

I guess I didn't do a very good job of reassuring her (maybe I was
laughing too loud), because after a couple more days, she said our
lifestyle was just "too weird" and she would be moving out at the end
of the week.
