In fact many people are doing this: The Compact (people pledge to buy nothing new for a year or more; the yahoo list is wildly popular); Reverend Billy and the church of stop shopping (he's an orator and comedian who does street theater in shopping malls and districts during the holidays, and has a new movie); Buy Nothing Day (the Friday after Thanksgiving); simplicity circles.

But I know, this kind of thing rarely makes the news and in real life I know very few others who think like th is. But a couple decades ago, none of these "movements" existed.
