What you say is true.  I had coffee yesterday with a friend who moved from here to IL.  The cheapest farm land there is $10,000 per acre!!!
 
At the same time, there is urban land that can be minifarmed free in most citys.

Unfortunately all the housing developers cause property values to increase to the point that funding IS an issue :-( Those lucky enough to be without a mortgage still face high property taxes (in most places); those who still have mortgages, well...
