Just chiming in late.  Many of us took "halfway steps" in the ' '70s that did work.  We bought land in the country, hand-built an energy efficient home, and worked to make a healthier, lower-consumption lifestyle and learn coping methods.  Those steps are serving us well now.  I suspect many others made positive changes in the ' 70s without dropping out completely.
