Because our government is in the hands of idiots now who are - as well as
being idiots - in the pay of big corporations.

The big corporations are being run by robbers and pirates - look at Enron.
You only need to look at CEO salaries (never mind the perks that don't get
reported!) and you will know - beyond any shadow of a doubt - that the long
term well-being of the corporation is not their prime concern: they want
to feather their own nests as quickly and as much as possible, and to hell
with the corporation's long-term survival.
