I'm against random or arbitrary blacklisting, too. I just don't think
that it applies in this case. Rackspace is well-known for moving their

cancelling their accounts - when they get blocked. It's that sort of
crap that makes the ground ready for blunt instruments like SPEWS.

Heh, well known for moving there spamming customers around, like me? Haven't sent spam in my life.

Rackspace is on target to host 15,000 servers by the end of the year. Any hosting provider of that size is going to have some spam, and I stand by my assertion that Rackspace deals harshly with people who violate their Acceptable Use Policy:

There is an entire department that enforces their terms of service. I know. I've been in their NOC. I've seen them unplug servers.

Now, Rackspace does host corporate web sites of people that are accused of using spam to advertise. If you give your e-mail address to Columbia House, and they send you an ad, is that spam? Should Rackspace be punished for that?

I doubt we will ever agree on this, but as someone who gets several hundred spam e-mails a day, I understand the pain. So I'll summarize my points and let you have the last word:

SPEWS, because of their unprofessional and shotgun approach to spam, will not be used by me. It's inelegant, like bombing a country because there is a hint of weapons of mass destruction. Better safe than sorry, with no recourse after the fact.

AOL, which probably has one of the largest problems with spam in the world, has a much more professional way of dealing with it. I prefer their methods, and would respect any system that was similar.

And I truly do love Rackspace - they are a great company and I like having them as my provider. (grin)
