Actually, I think what the judge said was the FTC had no authority to
do this. He didn't issue any opinion on
your rights... And before everyone gets worked up... House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Billy
Tauzin, R-La., and Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., said
Wednesday they were confident the ruling would be overturned and believe
Congress did give the FTC the necessary authority. "We will continue to monitor the situation and
will take whatever legislative action is necessary to ensure consumers can stop
intrusive calls from unwanted telemarketers," they said in a joint
statement. > -----Original Message----- > From: internetworkers-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org [mailto:internetworkers- > bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Alan MacHett > Sent: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 2:13 PM > To: Internetworkers: http://www.ibiblio.org/internetworkers/ > Subject: RE: [internetworkers] Federal judge blocks do-not-call list > > ...yeah, the amount of sheer stupidity perpetuated in the name of the > almighty dollar is truly dumbfounding. > > what gets me, though, is that this judge is, in essence, saying that the > telemarketers' right to free speech overrides my right to choose not to > listen to them. dumbass. > > And don't respond with "but you *don't* have to listen, just hang up." > Um, yeah, except the do-not-call-list is supposed to prevent the calls in > the first place; it's like a No Trespassing sign in the front lawn - I > don't care what your cause is, once the declaration has been made, you > don't get to step on the property... > > -Alan > > > Shea Tisdale said: > > I hate telemarketers as much as anyone, but... > > > > While everyone says that they don't like telemarketing, the facts bear > > out quiet a different picture. > > > > In 2000 direct marketing sales were 1.71 trillion dollars and accounted > > for almost 10% of the US Economy. > > > > So someone is buying... > > > > [snip others] > --- > Come and play at the InterNetWorkers Web site! > http://www.ibiblio.org/internetworkers/ > You are currently subscribed to InterNetWorkers mailing list > To unsubscribe visit > http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/internetworkers |
