Well, the first thing I would say is:

Linux and MacOS X both ship with their firewall enabled by default now,
while XP ships with it disabled. So enable it. It's under the Advanced tab
of your local area connection properties panel.

The RPC exploit (blaster) that was recently a problem would have been
blocked had this been enabled by default.
