Windows XP actually comes with a semi-capable firewall; you don't need
to buy an added cost product. It merely needs to be turned on. Check
the documentation here:
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/home/using/howto/homenet/icf.asp

This will help prevent things like the Blaster worm; it won't
necessarily stop email virus attacks like SoBig. Remember that security
is a process, not a product.
