PayPal does not necessarily confer protection against loss by fraud in the same way that a direct CC charge does. Read the Terms of Service. Chargebacks can be a problem. The charge transaction is to PayPal who have delivered the service of transferring funds into the sellers account. They delivered as adveertised even if the seller did not. Your basis for a chargeback is complicated by this fact. You don't really want to be in the position of trying to tease this apart.

If you have cause for worry, either don't do or seek other protection.

MBNA CCs have an interesting feature where you can generate a temporary Visa CC#, limited by time period, charge amount and number of transactions allowed. Free to use and ostensibly quite safe.
